The Move - Summer Program - My own little Kramerica (not really!)

Just a quick update as lots of good stuff going on....

As previously noted, TRY has a wonderful new office space at 500 Nepperhan Avenue. I am proud to say that I have built about 75% of the furniture with a minimum of frustration. I have to say though after building this stuff, I think it might be some sort of conspiracy - or at least a big joke that the manufacturers have on the folks that buy this stuff. I mean really....I bought a set that has three pieces that make up a unit. They have hundreds of little screws, nuts and nails in these little biggies that they title alphabetically. Yet, they refuse to put them in any sort of alphabetical or chronological order -- doesn't make sense. The one thing I'll say is that it's always great to buy multiple pieces of the same thing. Yesterday I built the second desk and shelf in less time than it took me to build about half of the first desk. So that's a positive

But I digress...

I'm very excited for Teens Run Yonkers Summer Program. We'll be doing both late, late, late afternoon runs as well as an early morning shift. Maximum sun avoidance is of course the goal. We'll also be throwing in a few surprises to the training to keep things interesting. But I'm not writing about that here..

Finally, also pleased to have some great new interns starting this week and I'm sure they'll be a big help in expanding our program, enhancing our volunteer recruitment, training and management and filling the blogoswaves. Yes - I sort of made that up. OK, so I can't resist - (WARNING: SEINFELD TRIVIA BREAK) interns, hmmmm. Makes me think of Kramerica and his days with Darrin. So, what school did Darrin come from? Now here's a toughie - Kramerica Industries was mentioned in another, much earlier Seinfeld episode - which one? Finally, after the failure of the blotter/ink project, what was the next initiative suggested? Was Darrin able to help with it? heeeelllloo (the voice)

A new home for Teens Run Yonkers, New Runners, Update on "the Streak" and Volunteers Wanted

So what's been going on? Lots actually

First off, thrilled to say that Teens Run Yonkers has its first ever home - Starting June (something - depending on when the furniture arrives), we'll have our office at 500 Nepperhan Avenue. This is exciting and looking forward to having some space for 1) wonderful volunteers that are helping us and 2) all the "stuff" we've accumulated from doing the program. This includes plenty of t-shirts (from 2010, 2011, and 2012), water bottles (with the original website on them), Clif Bars, Medals, Trophies and various other soon to be Teens Run Yonkers vintage items - ebay awaits! Anyway, a big thank you to Groundwork Hudson Valley that has been both our fiscal sponsor and host for the last year while we formalized and legalized the stuff we were doing.

From the program side, lots of nice news there too. Yonkers Middle High School has been doing a great job and are tracking towards a 10K as their next milestone race. Also, happy to share that we started with a great group of students from Gorton High School a few weeks ago. These are fantastic teens that are wonderful to work with - enthusiastic, committed and looking to do big things. And I have no doubt that they will!

On a personal running note, while I haven't been checking as often as I was before, realized today that my running streak is a at 188 days. Not sure what I'm going for exactly but feel like 220 days would be a good next milestone. If you recall, originally started by going for 110 days - it would be very cool to double it! One of the things that's been helping me out is I've been using the run walk run method made popular by Jeff Galloway - it's actually helped my pacing and with running every day, very helpful in building in some recovery time.

FInally - really finally - if you know any runners in the Westchester area that can make a commitment to helping teens, please send them our way. We now are working with three schools and will be starting our program with one of our partners from last summer. We need good people - caring is more important than running, by the way.
